For the love of Tailoring
I chose this career and created my iconic style in a matter of moments. I graduated from university and began a high-paying job, but I was spending almost every cent of my income on making new dresses. One day in a flash of inspiration, I told my dressmaker that I wanted to do what she did. I wanted to become a tailor. I stood in her shop one memorable afternoon and she said to me “sister Toyin, surely you’re joking!”
I replied, “joke bawo and what’s more, I want to start tomorrow.” She took some convincing that I was telling the truth. The next day I handed in my resignation letter and took up my seat at the sewing machine.
I worked as her apprentice, always dressing for the job I wanted not the job I had. I thank God and Mama Akinola every day for wisdom, the faith in me, and that of my parents, along with the passion to do what I truly love, which has got me where I am today.
